The staff at TLC Montessori lay the foundation for further learning with the fundamental toddler program outlined below. This preparatory work serves as a stepping stone for later concepts and skill development.
- Large Muscle Development
- Learning to walk, run, hop, jump, climb and sit quietly;
- Walking heel-to-toe;
- Using sliding boards, swings, climbing apparatuses, balance beams, large blocks and large balls
- Small Muscle Development
- Emphasis on eye/hand coordination;
- Use of peg boards, puzzles, beads for stringing, sorting, rubber-band boards for geometric shapes, tweezers and eye droppers;
- Practice opening and closing using sound boxes, zippering, buttoning, containers, etc.
- Language Development
- Use of containers filled with miscellaneous objects for vocabulary development and classification skills;
- Proper use of English by staff and encouragement of children to pronounce and name objects correctly;
- Emphasis on learning concepts: in/out, up/down, open/close, under/above, behind/in front, big/small, wide/narrow;
- Use of books, pictures, puppets;
- Emphasis on eye contact between staff member and child to encourage focusing and real communication.
- Art and Music Development
- Use of crayons, paint, play dough, paste, paper and items from nature;
- Use of rhythm and sound instruments;
- Development of rhythm patterns through song
